This unusual name has two possible origins, from the same source but with different meanings as a surname. The first origin is from the topographical name "Binn", also found as "Binns" and "Bines", denoting someone who lived at or by an open manger or stall or in a hollow place so called, the derivation being from the Olde English pre 7th Century word "binn", meaning "manger" or "bin". The second possible origin is from the metonymic occupational name, also "Binn(s)" or "Bine(s)" for one who made mangers or bins, for corn, meal, bread etc.. The parish records of Woolverstone, Suffolk, show the marriage of "Barbara Bines" to "Nathaneel Everett", on the 29th September 1676. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert Binns which was dated 1275, in the Lincolnshire Hundred Rolls. during the reign of King Edward 1, known as the Hammer of the Scots, 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
