This name is of English locational origin from a place in Oxfordshire called Bloxham or from Bloxholm in Lincolnshire. Both places were recorded as Blochesham in the Domesday Book of 1086 and derive their first element from an Olde English pre 7th century personal name Bloc(c), of uncertain meaning, plus 'ham' a homestead or enclosed piece of land. Hence 'the homestead of Blocc'. The surname is first recorded in the early half of the 12th century (see below). In 1292 the spellings de Bloxham and de Bloxholme are recorded in the Hundred Rolls of Lincolnshire. The name is particulary well recorded in London Church Registers from the late 16th Century under the variant spellings Blocksom, Blox(h)am, Bloxum, Bloxsome etc.. On October 5th 1867 George Fredrick Bloxsome married Rosa Grice in St. Pancras Old Church. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert de (of) Bloxeham. which was dated 1130 in the Pipe Rolls of Lincolnshire. during the reign of King Henry 1 known as 'The Lion of Justice' 1100-1135. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
