A transposed surname which has several possible origins. Early published records suggest that the name is a derivation from the Norse-Viking 'Hesli-Burg' meaning 'the dweller on the hill of the hazel trees', or from the villages of Haselbury found in various parts of England. However, it is our view that the name may have Huguenot associations and that it derives from the German 'Haselberg', recorded Heraldically in Rietstap's Armorial General, not being recorded in England before the 18th Century. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Wilihelm Haselberg. which was dated C.1680 The State of Prussia. during the reign of Emperor Leopold 1 1668 - 1705. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
