Recorded as Murie, Muiry and the patronymics Murieson, Murison, and Murrison, this is an ancient Scottish surname. It is said to be locational from the hamlet of Murie, in the parish of Errol, in Perthshire, although this is not proved positively. Like many such names the patronymics seem to be much more popular than the original base name. In addition the name is relatively poorly recorded in or near its apparent 'home', but mch more so in the north and particularly in Aberdeenshire. Early examples of the surname recordings taken from surviving charters, registers and rolls of Scotland include those of Simon Mwyrson given as being a husbandman or farmer of The Grange, Abirbothy, in 1448, whilst in a slightly different spelling Johannes Murysonne was a burgess of Kirkaldy at much the same period. Sir William Mureson was a burgess of Aberdeen in 1491, whilst John and Andrew Murie, given as being dissenting covenanters, perished when their ship sank off Orkney in 1679, whilst John Murie was a landowner of Path in Perthshire in 1757.
