Last name: Ridehalgh
This is a locational name "of Ridehalgh" near Preston in Lancashire. The name was originally spelt Riddyhalgh and meant a "stream running through a valley", so called from the Old English, pre 7th Century "rid" - a brook and "holh" -a hollow. The suffixes - hough and -halgh were interchangeable in Lancashire. Thus, in 1682, one, Edward Riddihough or Riddihalgh is recorded in the Preston Guild Rolls of that County. In the modern idiom, the name has four spelling variations:- Ridehalgh, Riddeough, Redihalgh and Redihough. The marriage of James Ridehalgh and Margaret Banks was recorded at Colne in Lancashire on February 8th 1785. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert del Riddyough, which was dated 1397, in the Preston Guild Rolls, during the reign of King Richard 11, known as "Richard of Bordeaux", 1377 - 1399. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.© Copyright: Name Origin Research www.surnamedb.com 1980 - 2012

I am apart of the Genealogy of Ridehalgh When William Chester Ridehalgh changed his name to Rydalch when he came to Utah. I have been doing genealogy since 1987. According to the database they changed there name to avoid paying taxes. So, we may all be related in one way or another. The hard part is trying to find the missing link.

Hi, I was wondering if you had any more information regarding the Rydalch family. I was just trying to piece together all the parts of my part of the family. My great-grandfather was Elvin Rydalch, and his father was Davis Rydalch. I'm kind of new to this, but any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Ryan

I am residing in Queensland, Australia and am researching my Lancashire forebears, the Ridehalghs.
I believe that I am related to James Ridehalgh, born 1764, christened at St Bartholomews, Colne, Lancashire, 30 December 1764; married Margaret Banks on 8 February 1785.
Descendants of James migrated to Australia in 1862.
Does anyone have knowledge of James and Margaret Ridehalgh?
Regards,
Keith Franklin

My father's family migrated to Astoria Oregon around the turn of the 20th Century from Liverpool (Mercyside) England. Walter William Ridehalgh and his brother James Robert Ridehalgh settled in Astoria and started a salmon cannery. My grandfather was born around 1904 and my father around 1921 and both were named Walter Thayer Ridehalgh. My father tired of the mis-pronouncing of Ridehalgh (some pronounced it Ride hog) and so he legally shortened it to Ride in 1942. No one has this name it seems!
