This is an English locational surname from a village called Tissington, a parish in the county of Derbyshire, near the town of Ashbourne. According to the Oxford Dictionary of English Place Names, Tissington means the settlement of the Tidsidge people, apparently an Olde English tribe pre 7th century tribe. The place is first recorded as Tizinctum in the famous Domesday Book of 1086, a spelling which does not exactly suggest Tidsidge as an origin, but there you are. Locational surnames are usually "from" names. That is to say surnames given to people after they left their original homes to move somewhere else. In this case though they do not seem to have moved very far as it is only in its home county of Derbyshire that Tissington as a surname is found in any numbers, and then not many. In the survivi9ng church registers of Derbyshire, the first recording may be that of Raphe Tissington of Carsington on July 22nd 1600, when his son Roger was christened, whilst Sarah Tessington married George Haywood at Codnor and Loscoe on Christmas Day, 1884.
