This is a name of Germanic origins which was recorded in its present spelling at least as far back as the 17th Century. The origination though is believed to be from the Scandinavian pre 10th Century "Treygg", a personal name of the period which translated as "The trusty or honest one" and was a term which was particularly applied to soldiers. It is possible that it referred to a "Rank" but this is not proven. The name recordings are not common but they include Francisia Gottliebe Treuge, the daughter of Freidrich and Juliane (nee Selke) Treuge, christened at Danzig Strasse, West Preussen, Germany on October 3rd 1833. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Andreas Treuge, which was dated November 13th 1597, of Heilsberg, Ostpreussen, Germany, during the reign of Emperor Rudolf 11 of the Holy Roman Empire, 1576 - 1612. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
