This origin of this name is 16th Century Huguenot, however, there are two possible sources. The first is that it is a variant or alternative spelling of the famous Dutch Vanderrell, of which there are at least eight variants recorded even as early as the 17th Century in England. The second is that it is a variant of the equally famous Vandal or Vandale, from the regions of Tournais and Lyon. In the first case, the name is Dutch\Flemish locational "The dweller at the stream" (Waella) from the pre 7th Century. The second is National, the Vandals being a Germanic Tribe of the 4th Century who settled in France. The present spelling is very recent, Nineteenth Century in the United Kingdom. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Katherine Vanderrall, which was dated 1601, married Baththolmew Betts at Mortlake, Surrey, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, "Good Queen Bess", 1558 - 1603. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
