Last name: Brawley

This interesting name has two possible origins, one French and the other Irish. The French locational name (de) Broglie is anglicized as Brolly. A Coat of Arms was granted to this family c.1680 and it is recorded in Rietstapps Amourial General. The shield is gold with a blue cross moline, indicating suffering for a faith. Brolly is also an anglicized form of the Olde Gaelic name O'Brolaigh. The Gaelic prefix "O" indicates "male descendant of", plus the personal byname Brolaigh, from "brollach", the breast. The sept belonged to the province of Ulster where the first anglicized form of the name appears in 1751, Neil Brawley married a Mary Mosmon. On November 7th 1816, John Brolly, son of Jermiah and Margaret Brolly, was christened in Ballymoney parish, Co. Antrim. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Mary Brolly married Duncan McDonald. which was dated December 15th 1763, at Donaghedy, Co. Tyrone. during the reign of King George 111, known as "Farmer George", 1760 - 1820. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Hey M Taylor, can you direct me how to look up that roster. I see where you list pg 351 & Number 5231, but I have just tried to access it online and can't seem to navigate it very well.

Tammy Brawley
Thanks M Taylor. Neil is my 5th great grandfather - my father, James Franklin Brawley, Jr. was born in Mooresville, NC in 1940 and I was born in Greensboro, NC in 1961. Most of my family still lives in NC, High Point, Trinity, Thomasville & Reidsville. I have a partial copy of the Brawley genealogy book written by John Karriker and it is fascinating. My partner and I are going to Ireland at the end of August and I was hoping to find more info on where in Ireland, we originally came from. It appears County Derry so far. I am also hoping for ship arrival info from when they came to America, first in PA, then they rel'd to NC in 1771. Thanks again.

Brawley was originally spelled Braley (or Braly) and Braley was the spelling he used when he enlisted in the Continental army. He's listed in "Roster of soldiers from North Carolina in the American Revolution" by National Society Daughters of the American Revolution pg 351 Number 5231. Google Neil Braley and the google books excerpt is online. He was rich and owned over 1800 acres of land by the time he died. I'm in Iredell County, NC.

Wow! That is quite a forum that M Taylor posted.

Tammy Brawley
Thanks M Taylor. Where do you live? I am in Richmond, VA and above is Elizabeth, also from Neil and she lives in Sacramento, CA. Do you have any sort of records beside the ones you list? Tammy Brawley.

M Taylor

By the way, Tammy, what is your Dad's name and your grandmother's name? The one you mention from Mooresville, NC?

Elizabeth Johnson
Just sent you a message on Facebook prior to reading this. Very cool to make this connection! I've been doing this family research for a long, long time! Coming from a family of all brother's, I've always been the only one who's taken any strong interest in the matter. Until, of course, I come up with information, then they want to know! Go figure!

Tammy Brawley
Oh wow! I would love to have a copy of what you have and I will share what I have as well. I don't have the entire book, only copies of some of the pages. But I will scan it when I am back at work and email it to you. Look for me on Facebook - I'll find you and request to be your friend. After I scan what I have, I will email it to you at the yahoo.com address. By the way, Mooresville, NC is where my dad was born and I spent some time there as a child with his mother, my grandmother. I live in Richmond, VA. Too cool!

TonyBrawley
Hi are you related to a William Brawley from Washington by any chance?

Elizabeth Johnson
Yes, this is the same family I am from! I have done my genealogy research for the past 20 plus years, mostly using Ancestry.com, but also family records from the Brawley's and other old-timer's and family names like Sutton, Barnes, and Hollis that are part of my Brawley family line. I have this exact same information dating from 1771 or so, Neil Brawley married Mary Mosmon, whose father was Robert Mosmon from the County Antrim Ireland 1730's. I know about this book by John Karriker, but I was never able to get my hands on a copy. I know the Brawley's settled in N.C. in Iredell County and they actually the area named Brawley (something). And also I think there is a town called Mooresville where they lived. There is a cemetery called the Presbyterian Centre Cemetery (or something close to that) where many of them are buried. I have all these records and would be happy to share them. My email address is: Y_Elizabeth.Johnson@yahoo.com. My Facebook page is under Yvonne Elizabeth Johnson. Hope to hear back from you. Elizabeth Johnson

Tammy Brawley
Hi Elizabeth. The information I have is that "my" Neil Brawley came to America in roughly 1771, settling in PA first, then relocating to NC, where I was born. He married Mary Mosmon and they had 10 children. What sort of information do you have on Neil and how you trace back to him? I have copies of various pages from a genealogy book written about the Brawleys by John Karriker.

Elizabeth Johnson
My grandfather, many times back is also Neil Brawley. My paternal grandmother is Stella Brawley Johnson of Alton, MO. Is this the same line of Brawley's? I am Yvonne "Elizabeth" Johnson. I live in Sacramento, CA.

TonyBrawley
