This unusual name has two possible origins. The first is a derivation from the French locational name 'La Mont' widely recorded in the U.K. from the 16th Century but found much earlier as 'Lamont'. The second origin is medieval job descriptive for a maker or seller of jobs, used particularly for 'Flambards' i.e. the flamming torches required for lighting. Most name holders will derive from the first source. The name development includes Andrew Larman (1624), baptised at St. Andrews Holborn on July 7th of that year and Christiane Lairman who married William Clark at St. Martins in the Field on April 16th 1723. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Jane Larmount, which was dated 1581, married Thomas Middleton at St. Veclast Church, London, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I 'Good Queen Bess' 1558 - 1603. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
