This interesting and unusual surname, of Italian origin, derives from the male given name Cacci, itself a short form of either of two italian personal names domenicacci or Laccacci. The former derives ultimately from the Latin "dies dominica" meaning "day of the lord", and is frequented explained as "belonging to the Lord" or "born on Sunday", and the latter is a derivative of lacopo, Jacob or James. Both these names have identical origins i.e. the Hebrew "aqob" meaning "supplanter" or "following-after". Jacob occurs before the Norman Conquest of 1066 in England, but like most scriptural name, in clerical circles only. After the Conquest, the Latin Jacobus was used for both Jacob and James. Surnames derived from given names are the most widespread surname type in Italy, and there are no less than sixty-sex. Italian diminutives of the given name lacopa. On March 28th 1850, Maria, daughter of Vincenzo and Maria Cacaci, was christened in Siracusa, south west Italy. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Nicola Cacace, (christening), which was dated March 17th 1834, San Severo, Foggia, Italy, during the reign of King William 1V of England, "The Sailor King", 1830 - 1837. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
