Recorded in a number of related spellings prior to the year 1900, including Noise, Noize, Noizet, Noizeux (France), Neset, Nesset, Nezet, Noizet (England), Nosset, Nosseat, Noscent, Nossent (Belgium), and possibly others, this is a surname of French origins. It is popular in France as Noise and Noizet, and in Belgium as the diminutives Noscent or Nossent, particularly so in the city of Liege, although in England all spellings appear to be quite rare. All however spelt originate ultimately either from a place called Noize near Deux Sevres in France, making them residential or locational, or in some cases from the ancient medieval word 'noise' meaning argumentative or quarrelsome, and as a surname a medieval nickname for such a person! In England ther surname is recorded as early as 1555 in the surviving church registers of the city of London with that of Georg Nosset at the church of St Antholin, whilst in the 18th century Nicholas Noizet, believed to have been a Huguenot refugee was recorded at the church of St Mary Mounthaw, also in the city of London on June 17th 1773. In Belgium the earliest surviving recording that we have, most earlier ones being destroyed in the various wars which ravaged the country particularly in Napoleonic times, is that of Anna Nossent. She married Phillipus Stienne, at Longcin, Liege, on November 28th 1697, whilst Joanna Maria Noscent was christened at the same place on July 18th 1706.
